Compé ’15 Juror: Elinor Carucci
Every year a distinguished photographer lends a discerning eye and an insightful mind to ONWARD, serving as competition juror and keynote speaker. ONWARD is multifaceted photography happening that includes Compé, an international competition for emerging photographers, and Summit, a photography festival held each year in Philadelphia. As participation increases each year, the job of judging becomes more challenging—but we are confident that this year’s guest juror is equal to the task. As ONWARD enters its eighth year, critically-acclaimed photographer Elinor Carucci has accepted our invitation to serve as Compé juror and Summit keynote speaker.
Elinor Carucci’s Work
Born in Jerusalem in 1971, Elinor Carucci has lived and worked in New York since 1995. Her critically-acclaimed photography is autobiographical and personal, exploring the complexities of being a woman, daughter, wife, and mother. Her recent monograph Mother (Prestel, 2013) is the culmination of a decade-long project that began when the artist was pregnant with twins. Like much of her earlier work, the series reveals family intimacy through images of both daily routines and moments of crisis, capturing the full range of emotional experience: joy, love, pain, anger, and exhaustion. One family’s intimate moments speak to a universal human experience of closeness in these unflinchingly honest photographs.
Summit ’15: Self as f/locus
The Summit theme for 2015, “Self as f/locus” couldn’t be more apt for this year’s juror. Best known for her family images, Elinor Carucci uses the camera as a tool for capturing her life’s most intimate moments, creating a parallel memory to that of her own mind. The artist appears in many of her photographs—and even from behind the camera, she is a strong presence in all of her photographs. On March 14, as keynote speaker at Summit ’15, Carucci will share her insight into the experience of taking herself as her subject.
About Compé ’15
Throughout the month of November, ONWARD Compé will be accepting submissions from emerging photographers around the world. When the last entries have been received on December 1, Elinor Carucci will join the elite group of distinguished photographers who have served as Compé juror over the years. The competition’s judge is responsible for choosing 56 noteworthy finalists and ultimately two outstanding grand prize winners from among a large pool of talented artists. We are honored to host Elinor Carucci as she serves as juror for the eighth annual ONWARD Compé. Her authoritative judgment is sure to make Compé a worthwhile contest for this year’s participants.
